The technology of flow cytometry and the discovery of a method to produce monoclonal antibodies have made possible the clinical use of flow cytometry for the identification of cell populations.

Applications
Immunophenotyping of Leukemias and Lymphomas
Flow cytometry is used in conjunction with morphologic criteria to :
  • aid in the diagnosis and classification of Leukemias
  • improve the diagnostic process
  • obtain better treatment selection
  • better assessment of the prognosis
Furthermore, flow cytometry is also useful in the classification of Lymphomas leading to the acquisition of its advantages as applied to leukemias.

Immune Deficiency Monitoring
Patients with acquired or congenital immunodeficiency disease  and on immunosuppressive drug therapy may exhibit characteristic alterations in lymphocyte populations (T and B lymphocytes),identification and quantification of which may be important in both diagnosis and disease monitoring.

Detection of  Minimal Residual Disease after administration of chemotherapy in patients with leukemia

Diagnosis of Hairy Cell Leukemia

Whose patients would benefit most from flow cytometry?

  • Hematologists
  • Internists
  • Oncologists
  • Pathologists
  • Surgeons
  • Pediatricians
