The Chemotherapy Unit offers services for diagnostic procedures and the delivery of treatment in the out-patient setting. Majority of its patient base are patients with cancer who can be given chemotherapy as out-patients & who require blood component transfusions. Likewise patients with non-malignant hematologic conditions who require blood component transfusions and chelating agent therapy are admitted to the Unit.
The Unit has a nursing staff who are well trained in the assessment, preparation & administration of chemotherapy and other drugs like monoclonal antibodies used in the treatment of cancer. They also have a good working knowledge of the side effects associated with the drugs commonly used in the Philippine setting. Our nurses are also trained in the administration of blood component therapy and chelating agent therapy for conditions who have iron overload. They are adept at intravenous access, even for difficult cases, as well access for indwelling venous catheters like Port-a-cath, and care for these devices.
The Unit includes several medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, adult hematologists, pediatric hematologists, and other specialists as members of its consultant staff. They are all accredited with the University of Santo Tomas Hospital as bona fide consultants and as Fellows/Diplomates of the their respective specialty societies.
The Unit has a seven bed capacity at any one time. Service is delivered on a first-come first served basis.
To achieve the goal of improved delivery of service with less inconvenience to the patient & family, the Chemotherapy Unit also has in stock commonly used chemotherapeutic agents and other medications like anti-emetics which can be purchased at reasonable prices.
