Adult Cardiology |
| |
Subspecialty training in Cardiology consists of a basic three-year program of training in clinical, non-invasive and invasive diagnostic cardiology. An additional year or more may be required when the Fellow chooses to concentrate on a specific area in Cardiology like Doppler Echocardiography, Interventional Cardiology or Electrophysiology. The trainee acquires clinical skills in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disorders through exposure to patients in the clinical wards, the intensive care units and outpatient clinics. Training also entails mastery of various ancillary procedures including electrocardiography, cardiovascular radiology, echocardiography and vascular ultrasound, nuclear cardiology, hemodynamic and interventional cardiology. Completion of fellowship training qualifies the trainee to apply for subspecialty certification in Cardiology from the Philippine College of Cardiology. The program is accredited by the Philippine College of Cardiology. |

Endocrinology and Metabolism |

The Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism offers a two (2) year clinical training program aimed to produce competent sub-specialists with a good working knowledge of diseases of the thyroid, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, obesity, disorders of calcium metabolism and bone, pituitary disorders, adrenal problems and diabetes insipidus. The trainee acquires skills necessary in the diagnosis and management of these disorders. The Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism accredit this Fellowship Training Program. |

Adult Gastroenterology |
| |
The Adult Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program is a two (2) year clinical program accredited by the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology (PSG) and the Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy (PSDE). At the end of the training period, the fellow is expected to be well versed in the art and science of gastroenterology and hepatology. He/she is expected to read and interpret basic radiological examinations, acquire proficiency in basic diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, as well as performance of percutaneous and ultrasound guided liver biopsy. These knowledge and skills are derived from actual patient care in the service wards and outpatient clinics of the Hospital and performance of procedures at the Endoscopy Unit of the Hospital. Fellows attend regular conferences integrating clinical data, radiological examinations, and endoscopic procedures in the management of patients. A team of consultants directly supervises six trainees at different levels in the program. |

Adult Clinical Hematology |
| |
Fellowship Training in Hematology requires three years of training in adult hematological diseases, immunology, and transfusion medicine. During the first year, the fellow acquires knowledge in the diagnosis and management of common hematological problems as well as hematological manifestations of systemic disease through actual patient care for both in- and outpatients. The fellow becomes proficient in the preparation of a good peripheral smear, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, phlebotomy and other procedures necessary in the diagnosis and management of hematological diseases. Additionally, the fellow acquires skills in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine, Immunology and rotates for brief periods to the Pediatric Hematology Section of the University of Santo Tomas Hospital and the Oncology ward of the Veterans Memorial Medical Center. Research output is required for completion of the program. Three accredited hematologists supervise the training program, which is accredited by the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. |

Adult Infectious and Tropical Diseases |

This two-year post-residency training program provides exposure for the fellow in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of common as well as uncommon infectious and tropical diseases through a broad range of activities including patient care, laboratory service training, epidemiological studies and research. The fellow acquires most of his laboratory training in Bacteriology and Mycology at the University Hospital, however, exposure to parasitology and virology are provided by rotation to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine. One fellow is admitted each year. A team of nine consultants supervises fellowship. This program is accredited with the Philippine Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. |

Adult Medical Oncology |

The Adult Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is a three (3) year training program. At the end of the training period, the trainee is expected to be well versed in the art and science of the various forms of hematological and solid tumors. The trainee is expected to be adept in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of common malignant diseases through a broad range of activities including total patient care, interpretation of various laboratory techniques, giving of the various chemotherapeutic regimens with knowledge of how to discern and treat side-effects, pain management, and research. This three-year post-residency training program also provides exposure to uncommon forms of malignancies. Accredited medical oncologists supervise the program and the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology accredits the program. |

Adult Nephrology |

This two-year post-residency training program provides exposure for the fellow in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of common as well as uncommon diseases of the kidney, urinary tract and hypertension. The fellow acquires proficiency in the performance of kidney biopsies and prescription and supervision of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Additionally, the fellow learns the basics in the management of patients undergoing renal transplantation. Most of the training activities are centered at the University Hospital consisting of actual patient care in the service wards, outpatient clinics, Artificial Kidney Unit and Intensive Care Units. A rotation to the National Kidney Institute provides exposure to renal transplantation. The program is supervised by six consultants and is accredited by the Philippine Society of Nephrology |

Pulmonary Medicine |

This is a two-year post-residency training program accredited by the Philippine College of Chest Physicians that qualifies its graduates to practice the subspecialty of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. The program admits three fellows each year. Fellows are trained in the recognition of pulmonary problems and interpretation and proficiency in performance of different procedures including pulmonary function tests, impedance plethysmography, fiberoptic bronchoscopy, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep studies, thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, and mechanical ventilation. The fellows take care of patients in the wards, intensive care units and outpatient department. Six fellows are supervises by a team of eight consultants. |

Rheumatology, Clinical Immunology and Osteoporosis |

The two-year training program on Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and Osteoporosis provides training aimed at the development of clinical skills and decision making important in the holistic care of a patient with rheumatic disease. The setting for learning is provided by actual patient care in the wards, outpatient department and the Bone and Joint Center with facilities for intravenous pulse therapy and bone densitometry. The Philippine Rheumatology Association accredits this program. |

Clinical Neurophysiology |
| |
Trainees can apply for a one-year Fellowship training program in Clinical Neurophysiology after completing an accredited Residency Training Program in Neurology, Child Neurology, General Psychiatry or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Program puts special emphasis to the assessment, monitoring and treatment of neurologic disorders involving central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems and the neuromuscular junction and muscles. This is accomplished by a combination of clinical evaluation and electrophysiological testing.
The program covers the broad area of clinical neurophysiology. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn electroencephalography (EEG), techniques of motor and sensory nerve conduction studies (NSS), diagnostic electromyography (EMG), evoked potential studies, assessment and management of neuromuscular disorders, treating patients with bolinum toxin (Botox), polysomnography, and intra-operative monitoring during carotid endarterectomies. |

Behavioral Neurology |
| |
The one-year Fellowship Training in Behavioral Neurology begins after completion of an accredited Residency Training program in Neurology, Psychiatry or the combined Neurology/Psychiatry Training program. The Behavioral Neurology/Biological Psychiatry/Neuropsychiatry program explores the complex relationship between behavior and brain function from the interdisciplinary perspectives of psychology, neurology and psychiatry. It is a discipline that investigates the psychiatric symptoms of neurological disorders and study psychiatric illnesses as brain disorders.
The focus of the program is in the brain-based functions (perceptual, cognitive, memory, emotion/personality). The fellow will have the opportunity to gain expertise in the fields of neurophysiology (electroencephalography, visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked or event-related potentials), neuropsycho-radiology/anatomy (CT Scan, MRI, PET, SPECT), neuropathology, neuropsychology, biological psychiatry, and cognitive rehabilitation. The fellow will evaluate in and out -patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms secondary to strokes, CNS tumors, head injury, autoimmune/inflammatory disorders and those with neurodegenerative diseases. Likewise, patients with psychiatric disorders will be evaluated using standard cognitive tests and rating scales reflective of a brain disorder. |

Stroke and Neurovascular Fellowship |

The one-year Fellowship training in Stroke and Neurovascular disorders begins after completion of Neurology Residency Training Program in any of the PNA accredited training programs. The Stroke Fellowship Training program hopes to provide the fellow trainees distinct opportunities and solid training in first hand management of hyper-acute stroke patients in the emergency room, the Stroke Unit, thru stroke consultations the UST Hospital and affiliate institutions, a one half-day specialty stroke clinic in the USTH OPD, and a once a week active participation in neuro-radiology conference. |

Ultrasound |
| |
The one-year Ultrasound Fellowship training program is geared towards the development of obstetrician-gynecologist with ultrasonography as subspecialty who will render service to the region from where he or she originated. It is usually conducted in the Obstetrics High Risk Unit of the Hospital and is focused in providing fellows with tertiary center level of training. The fellows care for the pregnant woman and the fetus as well as gynecologic patients. This program involves acquisition of knowledge regarding the parts and physics of the ultrasound machine as they relate to Obstetrics and Gynecological conditions. The program also focuses in the development of skills grounded on the principles of ultrasound-based and ultrasound-guided procedures as specified by world bodies.
This program of study is provided towards the attainment of cognitive, psychomotor and affective learning objectives. The training is more of a self-directed learning experience. The members of the High Risk Unit Consultant Staff however are committed to act as expert-authority, teacher and facilitator and to provide guidance to the trainees. Moreover, in line with the USTH mission and vision, the trainee joins the rest of the Department in giving service to the community thru duty hours at the Clinical Division. Trainees learn to monitor and correlate ultrasound findings with actual clinical findings in admitted cases and are required to participate in research studies in her field of interest. In particular, he or she must pursue and complete a meaningful research project as a pre-requisite to graduation. |

The two-year Perinatology Fellowship Training program is geared towards the development of obstetrician with expertise in maternal-fetal medicine as a sub-specialty. The one-year combined program of Neuro-Otology Fellowship Training program is under the Department of Otolaryngology. It is designed to train fellows and residents to obtain broad knowledge and high skill in Clinical Neuro-Otology. This program is also designed to promote cost effective evaluation and management of patients with hearing and dizziness problems. Didactic learning objectives will be achieved thru lectures by experts in the designated fields. Performance of procedures shall be under the strict supervision of these experts. |

Pediatric Allergy and Immunology |

The two-year Fellowship Training Program in Pediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology aims to provide an adequate and competent training and education for the practice of Pediatric Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The Fellowship program will begin after completion of three-year Pediatric Residency Training program in any Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) accredited training programs and after passing the written examination for Diplomate given by the PPS.
The Fellowship Training program aims to provide the following: 1. Enhance basic knowledge in the proper understanding of allergic and immunologic diseases. 2. Develop proficiency in the Clinical practice, teaching and research in the field of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology. 3. Develop expertise in the different diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in pediatric allergic and immunologic diseases. 4. Prepare the trainee for certification and accreditation by the Philippine Society of Allergology and Immunology. |

The two-year Fellowship Training program in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine aims to provide formal training and help trainees become competent and confident in the following: (1) as practitioners of the subspecialty and to qualify as active member/fellow of the Society of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine; (2) as facilitators of learning, able to teach pediatric critical care in a health professional school and (3) as researchers contributing to new knowledge in pediatric critical care and promoters of health. The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine begins after completion of a three-year Pediatric Residency Training Program in any PPS accredited training programs and passed at least the written examination for Diplomate of the PPS. |

The three-year Pediatric Hematology Fellowship Training Program provides a comprehensive clinical and research training program for candidates interested in a career in academic pediatric hematology. The program offers extensive in-depth exposure to a multitude of clinical pediatric hematological problems in a carefully supervised training environment.
The goal of training is for the fellow to develop the research skills and experience necessary to become a productive and successful independent clinical or laboratory investigator. Senior faculty mentors are careful to ensure that each fellow receives the guidance and direction required to develop a firm foundation on which to build a career in academic pediatric hematology/oncology. |

The Fellowship Training Program in Neonatology consists of three years of intensive study of the special problems of the neonates and their management. This includes a thorough understanding and knowledge of the newborn physiology and perinatal medicine.
The specialized skills acquired at the end of the training should allow the neonatologist to offer a much better quality of care to all newborns with special needs, especially those in the first months of life.
The candidate interested in Neonatology must be a graduate of a three-year General Pediatrics Training program in any PPS accredited training programs and must have passed at least the written examination for the Diplomate of the PPS. |

The two-year Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Training program aims to provide comprehensive treatment to all pediatric patients requiring general surgical care, both elective and emergency. A "pediatric patient" is he or she who is 14 years old or below.
The Fellowship training program opens one trainee at a time. Applicants must be a graduate of the General Surgery program in any PCS accredited training programs and a certified doctor by the Philippine Board of Surgery.
The Fellowship training program is two years in duration but the Department of Surgery offers an optional preceptorship on the third year. |

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery |

The training program is three years in duration under the direct supervision of the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Department of Surgery . One fellow will be admitted every two years upon satisfactory completion of the requirements of admission.
Basic principles in Reconstructive, head and neck, aesthetic, burns and hand surgery are acquired through didactic lectures, conferences, and teaching rounds. Graduate proficiency and operative responsibilities are developed utilizing all hospital cases admitted and/or referred to the Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery both in the Clinical and Private Divisions of the UST Hospital. Active participation in both basic and clinical research is encouraged as well as involvement in the teaching of surgical residents, interns, and clerks who are rotating in the service.
Periodic in service examinations are given to gauge the fellow's progress in the program and to help him prepare for certification by the Philippine Board of Plastic Surgery. |

The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship Training program is three years in duration. It is divided into two years of Basic Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and one -year research Fellowship in any chosen subspecialty field. One fellow will be admitted every two year upon satisfactory completion of the requirements of admission.
It is design to enable trainee to develop clinical competence and operative skills in the performance of varied types of TCVS surgical procedure according to internationally acceptable standards. |
